“First thing is, sometimes we get all together in the same space or we all are in video conferencing. And those are sessions that can last two, three days,” del Toro said, opening up for the first time about the nuts-and-bolts aspect of the collaboration. “But after that, it’s almost like we take turns to a degree — or we each get big, big homework to do and then we come back. And then we exchange that homework and then we have input from that.

“I’ve done collaborations like that. In ‘The Devil’s Backbone,’ I co-wrote with another two writers in Spain. We did [that] just through e-mail,” he continued. “It’s complicated if you have a lack of chemistry. But if you have synchronicity, it’s great.”

The Jonases may also walk away from the October 16 event with another award for Best New International Artist. Alizée, Katy Perry, Paramore and Tokio Hotel are also nominated in that category.

Young was discovered “unresponsive” by his mother at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif., on Aug. 23 after spending the previous evening out with friends. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The club she played, a relatively new venue called Le Poisson Rouge, was ideal for her current show, which is very straightforward. Some 600 people were arrayed at tables and up on risers around a circular stage in the middle of the room. The high-end lighting technology seemed to reflect the state of that particular art, and the sound system was that rare thing, a model of both bone-shivering power and absolute clarity. They had been displaced for 10-14 days, and the uncertainty of it all was probably too much for anyone to handle, let alone if you’re someone with children or trying to take care of your family. I don’t want to discredit anyone — FEMA and a lot of the city and state agencies did a decent job getting people organized and getting people on buses out of town. A lot of lives were most likely saved. But I’m not exactly sure how far their plans extended once they did get them out of town. Maybe they were thinking they’d have evacuees for three, four days at most. I don’t think they were thinking of having people for one to two weeks.

We visited Galveston the next day, the first day they were letting residents back into town. What we saw will never leave me. Galveston is a big beach town. If you were in Houston with an afternoon to kill, and the weather was nice outside, you’d drive down to Galveston. It’s like a Santa Monica or a Coney Island. But coming back into Galveston that day, it was something else. There weren’t any boats, and there weren’t any tourists. Where there were once buildings and shopping centers and people’s homes, now there was just a pile of debris. You could tell no one really knew what to make of it all.

Rise and shine! The G-Unit General says there’s no lying down on the job. 50 Cent just released “Get Up,” the first record from his upcoming Before I Self Destruct LP.

“Trust me, homie, I’m not playing/ I’ll have the dance floor off the chain,” 50 promises on the record. He also gives his word to make “every other week feel like Mardi Gras.”
